Hold Rites For Civil War Vet
Conduct Services Sunday Afternoon For Francie M. Jefferies Of Ira
Ira, Jan. 1 – Special – Funeral services for Francis M. Jefferies, Civil war veteran who died Thursday at the age of 89 years, were held Sunday at Union Chapel with the Rev. A. J. Matthews, pastor of the Methodist Episcopal church, in charge. Death was caused by a weakened heart following an attack of influenza.
Music was furnished by a mixed quartet composed of Ortho Hulse, Rev. Matthews, Mrs. Matthews and Mrs. Les Hartley.
Pallbearers were W. H. Baker, Clifford Baker, F. J. Rippey, C. E. Jones, C. A. Vantomme and J. W. Wilson
Born in Indiana
Francis M. Jefferies, son of Milton and Elizabeth Jefferies, was born in Henry county, Ind.; on Dec. 1, 1839. When five years of age, he, with his parents, moved to Kosciusko county, Ind. where he grew to manhood.
In 1853 Mr. Jefferies made his first trip to Iowa where he remained for one year before returning to Indiana. At the outbreak of the Civil War he enlisted in Company I, 30th Indiana Volunteers Infantry. He was the last of his company to die. He was a member of Warsaw post No. 112 of the G.A.R.
Lived at Ira 30 Years
Mr. Jefferies resided in and around Ira for about 20 years. After his brother, Allen, died in 1913, he went to live with his nephew, Curtiss, until 1922. For the last six years he made his home in Warsaw, Ind., returning to the home of his nephew in Ira on July 6, 1923 where he lived until the time of his death.
Mr. Jefferies was never married. The only near survivors is a half-brother, S. O. Jefferies of Syracuse, Ind., and two nephews, Francis H. Jefferies of Gooding, Idaho, and Curtiss Jefferies of Ira, Ia.
