Matilda Wendt Died in Her Home Early Sunday
Mrs. Matilda Hanke Wendt, 78, of 123 W. Fourth Street South died at her home at 12:30 Sunday morning. She had been bedfast since last April.
She was born Oct. 6, 1863 at Freeport, Ill., and united in marriage to August Wendt, on Easter 1886, who preceded her in death on July 26, 1896. Mr. Wendt was a former Newton Grocery and Dry Goods store owner.
She is survived by a son William of Hialeah, Fla., and two nieces Phyllis who is attending Ames college and Mrs. Glen Baker of Mingo and a granddaughter, Dian Sue, and two step children, Mrs. Grace Dean of Canton, S.D., and August Wendt of Newton and a nephew Lee Hanke. Mrs. Agnes Pauls has been her companion for the past nine years.
Mrs. Wendt was a member of the Lutheran church and of the Three Quarter Century club.
Funeral services will be held at the Morgan Funeral home at 2 o’clock, Tuesday afternoon with the Rev. Frederick Boldt assisted by Rev. W. H. Blancke officiating. Interment will be in the Newton cemetery.
