John Schermerhorn Dies at Iowa City; Services Friday
John W. Schermerhorn, 79, of 724 E. Fourth St. N., a resident of Newton since 1894, died at 11:20 a.m. Tuesday at the University Hospitals in Iowa City.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Johnson Funeral Home.
The Rev. Lawrence Athey, associate minister of the First Methodist Church, will conduct the services. Burial will be in Newton Union Cemetery.
Mr. Schermerhorn is survived by his wife; a son, Arthur of San Jose, Calif.; two daughters, Mrs. Violet May Sheehan of Newton and Mrs. Frank (Florence) Gregg of Des Moines; eight grandchildren; two brothers, A. O. Schermerhorn of Paramount, Calif., and Harold Schermerhorn of Upland, Calif., and a sister, Mrs. John (Pearl) Richmond of Fort Worth, Tex., formerly of Newton.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and a sister.
The son of James and Mary C. Reddington (s/b Redding) Schermerhorn, he was born Aug. 8, 1883 at Oakland, Iowa.
He was educated in Oakland and rural Laurel schools, having moved to that community in 1899.
Mr. Schermerhorn was married to Myrtle Wise Nov. 28, 1905 in Newton.
Mr. Schermerhorn was a general contractor for many years before his retirement.
