Alice Myrtle Schermerhorn Dies Today
Alice Myrtle Schermerhorn, 87, 306 W. 3rd St. S., longtime resident of Newton, died this morning at Skiff Memorial Hospital.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Johnson Funeral Chapel.
The Rev. Ray Barnett, pastor of the First Christian Church, will officiate and burial will be in Newton Union Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home after 4 p.m. Thursday.
Surviving are a son, Arthur J. of San Jose, Calif.; two daughters, Mrs. Violet Sheehan of Newton and Mrs. Frank (Florence) Gregg of Des Moines; eight grandchildren and a great-grandson.
She was preceded in death by a sister, a brother and a grandson.
A member of the Women’s Relief Corps, she was serving as chaplain at the time of her death. She was also a member of the Women of the Moose and Golden Agers, of which she had been named queen a number of years ago.
The daughter of Jeremiah and May Farnham Wise, she was born Sept. 23, 1882, in Newton.
