Gary Wayne Roberts
June 2, 2017

Gary Wayne Roberts, 78, of Cedar Rapids, died Friday, June 2, 2017, at Heritage Nursing and Rehab Center after a short illness. A celebration of Gary’s life was June 6 at the Oakland Church of the Nazarene in Cedar Rapids.

Gary is survived by his wife Cheryl J. (Northrop) Roberts; and three children, Kevin Roberts, Pamela Roberts-Hansen and Brenda(Richard) Lacher; nine grandchildren, Sara Roberts, Katie (Jerry) Wood, Leea McGinness, Destiny Smith and Holly Roberts, Lape and Emma Hamlin, Henry and Lane Hansen and Curtis and Heather Lacher; 11 great–grandchildren; and many loving nieces and nephews.

Gary was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Earlene Wade and Madonna Gulling; and his son, Clint Roberts.

Gary was born in Newton, in 1938, the son of Nealy and Pearl (Duffy) Roberts. He lived his early life in Jasper County, moving to Linn County later. He worked at Quaker Oats as a millwright and retired in 2000, from Knutson Construction. He married Cheryl (Northrop) Thompson June 4, 1988. They were married just two days shy of 29 years.

Gary enjoyed being outdoors and living life to the fullest in those activities. Whether he was fishing, hunting or attending Fur Trader Rendezvous with Cheryl, he liked to be outside. He enjoyed sharing and teaching his grandkids many of those skills. Cheryl and Gary camped often and in the summer, you would find them at Sandy Beach Campgrounds. Gary also attended car shows and enjoyed four years of building his car Rosie, a 1936 Plymouth, with his siblings, grandchildren and friends who stopped over.

His family will miss him greatly, but are comforted by knowing that he died the same date, 16 years later, as his son, Clint. They feel that Clint was saying, “I got this.”In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family. ~ The Jasper County Tribune, Colfax, Iowa 2 June 2017.
