Died – At his residence, two and a half miles south of Colfax, Thursday, August 24 1893, John McCracken; aged 66 years, 6 months and 4 days.
Mr. McCracken was an old settler of Jasper county having come here over 35 years ago and settled upon the land which has since been his home. A rugged stalwart descendant of honest Buckeye stock – a native of Licking county, Ohio, he earned all he achieved and deserved the success which crowned his endeavors. A loving wife, the mother of the seven children who survive him and four gone before, passed away a few years ago, and her loss following closely upon a serious injury sustained in a fall from his barn loft operated to unsettle Mr. McCracken’s mind, and since January 1, 1893, he has failed both mentally and physically. The crisis in his case was reached last week, and on last Monday he sunk into a semi-comatose state from which he never rallied. The funeral will be from the residence at 1 p.m. tomorrow; Rev. Knight will conduct the service, and the interment will be at Oak Hill.
