Man Drowns While Wading in Indian Creek
Roy Hanson, 22 Years Old, Son of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Hanson Drowns Sunday Afternoon
The Boy Could Not Swim
Several Young Men, None of Whom Could Swim Were Wading in the Water
Late Sunday afternoon the citizens of Colfax were filled with dread and fear as the word was sped over the wire that a drowning had occurred in Indian Creek.
Quite a number of picnickers from Colfax, Ira and other points were enjoying the cool shade and the water near the Lowry bridge across Indian Creek some five miles from town.
It seems that the drowned boy, Roy Hanson in company with several companions, none of whom could swim decided to go in wading. It was thought that at that point the waster was not deep. Just how it all happened probably will never be known, but with a suddenness that was appalling, the lad who but a few minutes before had been so full of life and promise was gone, and although help was close at hand, it was thought the body could not have been under more than five minutes, and although kind and loving hands did all they knew to kindle the spark of life, it was all in vain. Death, that grim reaper had called and there was naught but to break the news to the unsuspecting parents.
Mr. and Mrs. Ed Hanson, parents of the boy live on the farm known as the Rippey place near Ira.
The funeral was held at Union Chapel Tuesday afternoon, after which the many friends of this sorely stricken family followed all that was mortal to the McGeavers (sic) cemetery where amidst flowers and broken hearts Roy Hanson was laid to rest.
(Cemetery is called McKeevers)
