Obituary of Mrs. Susan hand
Susan Myers was born in Hancock county, Ohio, March 4, 1832, and died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. A. E. Cordray, in this city, January 14, 1914, age at date of death 80 years, 8 months and 8 days.
In August 1850 she was united by marriage to Arthur Hand and they were the parents of twelve children, five of whom died in infancy or early childhood. The surviving children are M'mes E. J. Winslow and A. E. Cordray, of this city; M. E. Bradshaw, of Dexter; John Kester, of Stewartville, Minn.; Clara Hutson, of Newton; Mr. J. H. Hand, of Newton, and E. B. Hand of Osceola, South Dakota.
Mrs. Hand came to Iowa with her husband about 62 years ago and they established a home on a farm in Story county where they remained a few years and then moved to the homestead north of Mingo.
Mrs. Hand became a Christian early in life and to the end remained devoted and faithful to the church of her choice - the Methodist Protestant. She was a great sufferer for many years and during the last three years was an invalid. Besides her children she leaves to mourn her departure a brother, George Myers, and three sisters, M'Mes Mary Mercer, Hugh Pease and Hannah Rickles, and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral was from the home of Mrs. A. E. Cordray, of this city, at 10 a.m., Saturday, January 17th, conducted by Rev. Edw. Pruitt assisted by Rev. L. B. Pruitt and interment was at Sams cemetery in Poweshiek township, by the side of her husband who passed out of this life in 1903.
