Death of Mrs. Mary E. Garwood
Many people will be sorry to hear of the death of Mrs. Mary E. Garwood better known in this community as Grandma Garwood, at the home of her daughter in Richmond, Indiana, June 3rd. She resided for several years
north of Colfax with her son, F. J. Garwood, where she made many friends with her cheery smile and friendly greetings.
Mary E. Negus, daughter of Joseph and Eliza Negus was born January 17, 1844 in eastern Pennsylvania. When quite young she came with her parents across the country in wagons to her new home northwest of Richmond which her father bought from the government. Here she lived until the beginning of the civil war when the family moved to Clark county, Ohio.
On March 18th 1869, she was united in marriage to David C. Garwood. To them, four children were born Herbert W., Foster J., Bertha M. and Anna E. In 1895 the family moved to California where she spent sixteen years, coming east at the death of her husband, who with the oldest son, has preceded her.
She enjoyed a birthright membership in the Friends Church and, although unable to attend for some time, she never lost her interest in the church and Sunday school. She had a cheerful disposition with always a welcome and a smile for every friend and neighbor that came into the home. Children often brought flowers and their toys for grandmother to see and enjoy and sometimes it was to play some games with her that would claim their attention in after school hours. Her greeting, a wave of the hand, to neighbors too far away to speak to, told them that Grandmother knew they were there and that she loved them.
To give rolls of Sunday school papers and magazines to friends who did not have them was one of the many little things she loved to do.
At sunset June 3rd, at Richmond, Ind. She slipped away home, to her husband and son and to her Heavenly Father, who so wonderfully cares for his children.
