Charlotte Garwood Died At Clarinda April 24
Mrs. Charlotte Garwood, 85, former resident of this community died at the Municipal hospital in Clarinda, Iowa, Friday, April 24th, after having suffered a stroke April 18th.
Charlotte Beems Garwood was born near Greencastle, Iowa in Jasper County on February 4, 1874, daughter of Jeannette and David Beems, and passed away on April 24th 1959 at Municipal Hospital, Clarinda, Iowa.
She attended the rural school at Greencastle and later enrolled at Highland Park college in Des Moines and received a teacher’s certificate. She taught a rural school near Almena, Kansas.
On December 26, 1899, she was united in marriage with Foster J. Garwood and they moved to Davenport, Iowa. Two children were born to them there, Mary Jeannette who died in 1936 and Charlotte Winifred, now Mrs. C. W. Steward of Bedford, Ia., in whose home she had been living.
On March 1st, 1910 she, with her husband and family moved to their farm two miles northwest of Colfax, Iowa and lived there until November 1946 when she and her husband went to live in Bedford. They enjoyed the celebration of their golden wedding anniversary on Dec. 26, 1949, and in September 1950, Mr. Garwood passed away.
Mrs. Garwood continued to live in her apartment until suffering a stroke on Saturday, April 18th.
She enjoyed a full life and spent many hours calling on, and chatting with her neighbors by phone, when she became unable to see them.
She became a Christian at an early age and was a faithful member of her church. She always listened to a service on the radio each Sunday when she was unable to attend the services. She was a member of the Bedford Methodist church.
After years of active membership she became an honorary member of the Poweshiek Township Women’s club at Colfax, and the Fortnightly Club of Bedford. She had been a member of the Rebekahs.
Mrs. Garwood is survived by her daughter Charlotte, and son-in-law, Dr. Steward and grandson Dick of Bedford, Iowa; two other grandsons who live in Iowa City, Bill and Bob and their wives; and three great-grandchildren, Bobby, Cindi and K. C. She has one sister, Mrs. Milo Smith of Colfax and several nieces, nephews and cousins, who will miss her kindly interest and helpfulness. “Aunt Lottie” and Grandma Garwood, as she became to almost all younger than she, always enjoyed to the utmost the activities of those near and dear to her.
Funeral services were conducted at Bedford and in Colfax Sunday afternoon.
Music at the local Methodist church was furnished by Miss Eleanor Howell on the organ. Rev. E. Harold Jackson officiated at the service in Colfax.
Those in charge of flowers here were Mrs. Charles Morgan, Mrs. C. L. Pease and Mrs. Richard Evans.
Burial was in McKeever cemetery north of Colfax.
