Former Resident, Freddie Cortez, Died in Georgia
Services for Freddie P. “Stacey” Cortez, 34, of Atlanta, who died there Thursday, Feb. 27, of multiple gunshot wounds, were held at 1 p.m., Wednesday, March 5, at Estes & Son Funeral Home in Des Moines. Burial was in Glendale Cemetery. Officials in Atlanta ruled the death a homicide.
Mr. Cortez was born in Florala, Ala., and lived in Des Moines and Colfax before moving to Atlanta six years ago. He had been a cook.
Survivors include his father, Paul F., and stepmother, Jessie Cortez, both of Des Moines; 4 sisters, Jacqueline L. Cortez, Ella Louise Cortez, and Harriete L. LaMar, all of Des Moines, and Mickia A. Baker of Atlanta; 8 brothers, Terry B. James, Walter F. Cortez and Richard M. Baker, all of Des Moines, John C. Fuller of Miami, Fla., Andre C. Cortez of Atlanta and George D. Baker and Anthony L. Baker, both of Minneapolis, Minn.; and his grandparents, Hattie Cortez of Des Moines and Rindi Fuller of Florala, Ala.
