Freda S. Schnell Brierly, a lifelong resident of Jasper County and longtime resident of Newton, died Saturday, Dec. 2, following a stroke at Skiff Medical Center.

Memorial services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Newton Congregational United Church of Christ.

Private burial services at Elk Creek Township Cemetery in Elk Creek Township will be held prior to the memorial services.

Cremation was held.

Memorials to the Jasper County Historical Society or the Newton Congregational United Church of Christ will be accepted.

Survivors are a son, Robert, of Des Moines; a daughter, Ann Platt of Sioux Falls, S.D.; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Larry, a prominent Newton attorney.

Mrs. Brierly was active in many organizations.

A member of the Congregational United Church of Christ, she served as president of the Women’s Fellowship for several years.

A member of the PEO Sisterhood, she served as president of Chaper HS and was the first president of Theta Chi Sorority.

Mrs. Brierly, a member of the Order of Eastern Star for 20 years, worked with the Skiff Medical Center Auxiliary, making puppets for children.

For 31 years she and her husband visited Fish Island, Rainy Lake, Canada, where they had a home. They made several trips to foreign countries and, after his retirement, they made an around the world trip.

She was interested in history, especially where it concerned her pioneer ancestors.

The daughter of George M. and Effie Castorf Schnell, she was born on a farm in Buena Vista Township, 12 miles southeast of Newton.

She attended Spring Hill rural school through the eighth grade and was a 1919 graduate of Newton Community High School.

After receiving a degree in history and English from Grinnell College in 1924, she taught school in Brooklyn.

She was married to Laurence Brierly Oct. 14, 1926 and had resided in Newton ever since her marriage. ~ The Newton Daily News, Newton, IA, December 4, 1995.
