Walter Raymond Haines, 100, of the Newton Health Care Center, died of complications of Alzheimer’s Disease, Sunday, Oct. 4 at the care facility.

Public Masonic services will be held Thursday at 6 p.m. at the Wallace-Pence Funeral Home in Newton. Graveside services will be held Friday at 10 a.m. at the Newton Union Cemetery with the Rev. Emmanuel Dass, senior pastor of the First United Methodist Church in Newton officiating.

Friends may call at the funeral home after noon Thursday.

Memorials to the Masonic Scholarship Fund will be accepted.

The son of Edwin Samuel and Laura Blanche Shafer Haines, he was born June 11, 1898, in Lynnville.

Mr. Haines resided in a variety of cities and states including Lynnville, Newton, Michigan, New York, California, Illinois and Washington D. C. He was employed by the Veterans Administration and Department of Labor and as an inspector for the Maytag Company and quality control inspector for McDonnell Douglas. Mr. Haines was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Newton, Newton Masonic Lodge No. 59 AF & AM, Des Moines 32 Degree Scottish Rite, Al Malaikah Shrine in Los Angeles, Calif., and a life member of the Newton Elks Lodge No. 1270.

He is survived by a niece, Mary Carlton and many cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister and two brothers and sisters-in-law. ~ The Newton Daily News, October 5, 1998.
