Succumbs Following Two Weeks Illness; Services To Be Sunday
Mrs. James Schermerhorn, 82, died this morning at her home, 728 East Eighth street North following a two weeks illness.
Mts. Schermerhorn, the former Mary Redding, was born Aug. 28, 1859, in Bayne Bridge, Ohio, and was united in marriage to James R. Schermerhorn May 22, 1881, in Council Bluffs, Ia.
The couple resided in Oakland, Ia., for some time, then moved to a farm in Marion county, later moved to Marshall county and came to Jasper county about forty-one years ago. They have resided at their present address in Newton for twenty-seven years.
The couple observed their 60th wedding anniversary with their children, May 22, 1941.
Surviving relatives are the husband and seven children: Mrs. J. W. Richmond of Newton; Mrs.; Mrs. Jesse Riley of Pryor, Okla.; Cecil, John, and Arthur Schermerhorn all of Newton; Elmer Schermerhorn of Kansas City, Mo., and Harold Schermerhorn of Tulsa, Okla. Also, thirty-three grandchildren and twenty-four great-grandchildren.
One son, Roy Schermerhorn, proceeded in death three years ago.
Funeral services will be held at 2 o’clock Sunday at the Murdoch Funeral Home. Interment will be held in the Newton Union cemetery.

Schermerhorn Rites Sunday
Final rites for Mrs. James Schermerhorn, 82, who died at her home Friday following a two weeks illness, were held at the Murdoch Funeral Home Sunday, March 15, at 2 o’clock, with Dr. Loren Edwards in charge.
Music was furnished by M. J. Miles, who sang, “Going Down the Valley,” and “The Old Rugged Cross,” accompanied by Mrs. R. L. Jackson.
Floral pieces were in charge of Mrs. Vernon Fisher and Mrs. George Huffman.
Those serving as pall bearers were: Claude Schermerhorn, James Schermerhorn, Arthur Schermerhorn, Alfred Schermerhorn, and John Schermerhorn. Burial was in the Newton Union cemetery.
