Local Woman Dies Today

Mrs. Harriet Reynolds, 90, long-Time Newton Resident Succumbs

Mrs. Harriet Reynolds, 90-year old widow of Hayden Reynolds, a Civil War veteran, died this morning at the Soldiers’ Home in Marshalltown of complications following an attack of influenza.

A resident of Newton for about 60 years, Mrs. Reynolds had closed her Newton home, located at 220 West Second street South to reside at the Soldiers’ Home since her health failed two years ago. Prior to that time, she had spent the last several winters in Marshalltown.

Harriet Walker was born Oct. 25, 1853, in Illinois, the oldest of a family of ten children of William Bailey Walker and Mary Ann Dixon Walker. At an early age she came to Iowa with her parents to locate in Union county.

In addition to her husband she was preceded in death by two children, who died in infancy, and a step-son.

Surviving relatives are: one sister, Mrs. George Rogers of Newton; one brother, Irvin Walker of Springfield, Mo., three stepchildren, Arthur Reynolds and Mrs. Robert Linder, both of Newton, and Mrs. Joe Townsend of Kellogg; and several nieces and nephews, including Mrs. Ray Walker who made her home with Mrs. Reynolds for a number of years.

Mrs. Reynolds was a member of the Newton First Christian church, a charter member of the Newton Women’s Relief Corps, in which she had maintained an active interest as long as her health permitted, and a member of The Daily News’ Three Quarter Century club.

The body has been returned to the Morgan Funeral home in Newton where services will be arranged. ~ The Newton Daily News, Newton, Iowa, march 3, 1944.
