Merle Smith, 60, Dies at Hospital; Rites Thursday
Merle E. Smith, 60, of 500 South Third Avenue West, a resident of Newton for approximately 20 years, died Monday afternoon at Veterans Hospital in Des Moines.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the First Presbyterian Church.
The Rev. William Sexton, minister of the church, will conduct the services. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery in Knoxville.
Friends may call at Toland Funeral Home after 1 p.m. Wednesday. The casket will be closed at 1:30 p.m. Thursday and not reopened.
Survivors are his wife, Faye; two sons, Steven and Merle Jr., both at home; two brothers, Hoyt A. of Somis, Calif., and Glenn L. of Newton; two sisters, Mrs. Faye Giorgetti of Knoxville and Mrs. William (Frieda) Connell of Crystal River, Fla.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister.
Mr. Smith was a member of the First Presbyterian Church.
A veteran of World War II, he was a painter and interior decorator.
The son of Albert and Edith Burdick Smith, he was born Aug. 30, 1908 in Knoxville and was educated in Knoxville schools.
He was married to Faye Thomas Mar. 26, 1950 in Newton.
