Memorial services for Clarence Weseman Griebeling, 94, of 619 1st Ave. W., a lifelong and third generation resident of Newton, will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 20, at the Congregational United Church of Christ.

The Rev. David Raymond, pastor of the church, will conduct services. Burial will be in Newton Union Cemetery.

He died recently [May 3, 1992] at the home of his daughter, Carolyn, in La Jolla, Calif. Cremation followed death.

Memorials to the Congregational United Church of Christ will be accepted.

Survivors are two daughters, Mary Jo Niskin and Carolyn Jane (Mrs. Howard) Runyan of La Jolla, Calif., and three grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Pearl, in 1991, a daughter, Constance Jo in 1935, and a sister, Gabrielle Doolittle.

Mr. Griebeling was a 80-year member of the Congregational United Church of Christ, American Legion Post 111, Last Man’s Club of the American Legion, Masonic Lodge 59 AF and Am, past exalted ruler of the Newton Elks Lodge, a member of the Apollo Club, the Commerce Club of the University of Iowa at Iowa City, now known as Delta Sigma Pi, was the 282nd member initiated Phi Delta Theta at the University of Iowa and its past president.

Mr. Griebeling, a retired cashier for the Maytag Co., had been a member of the Newton City Council and a member and past president of the Newton Board of Education.

He served in the Army during World War I and the Iowa National Guard during World War II.

The son of Charles and Marie Weseman Griebeling, he was born Jan. 6, 1898 in Newton, was a 1915 graduate of Newton Community High School and 1920 graduate of the University of Iowa.

He was married to Pearl Constance Boyd Aug. 25, 1926 in Story City. ~ The Newton Daily News, May 1992.
