Lee’s Summit, Mo. – Elizabeth Thompson Johnson, John Knox Care Center in Lee’s Summit, Mo., a former longtime resident of Newton, who observed her 100th birthday in November, died Thursday, Feb. 22, at the care center.

Gravesite services will be held at noon Wednesday at the Newton Union Cemetery.

The Rev. Jerry Brown, senior pastor of the Newton First United Methodist Church, will conduct services.

Visitation with the family will be held from 11 a.m to noon Wednesday at the Wallace-Pence Funeral Home.

Memorials to the First United Methodist Church will be accepted.

Survivors are two daughters, Julia (Mrs. Chadwick E.) Boltz of Kansas City, Mo., and Louise (Mrs. Charles R.) Mentzer of Missouri Valley; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded by her husband, Lewis H. Johnson April 23, 1983, and to brothers, Ed and Robert Thompson.

Mrs. Johnson, a homemaker, was a member of the First United Methodist Church, was active in the Women’s Society of the church and was a member of the Chat-A-Bit Club.

The daughter of James and Julia Cook Thompson, she was born Nov. 5, 1895 at Straffan, Ireland, coming to Newton from Ireland in 1911.

She was a graduate of Newton Community High School.

She moved to Kansas City, Mo. In 1984 to be near her daughter.

She was married to Lewis Hoadley Johnson Oct. 22, 1919 in Newton. ~ The Newton (IA) Daily News, February 1996.
