Dies Unexpectedly; Suffered Heart Attack Following Operation Tuesday

Frank Guthrie, 47, manager and proprietor of the Guthrie Feed and Seed Store, died unexpectedly at 2:55 a.m. today at the Skiff Memorial hospital where he had been a patient since Monday afternoon, suffering from an intestinal obstruction.

Mr. Guthrie established the feed business in Newton in March, 1922, and had continued his policy of fair dealing and honesty with his patrons through the years.

He submitted to a major operation on Tuesday morning and was apparently recovering when he suffered a heart attack resulting in death.

Native of Colorado
Frank, son of Ami T. and Agnes Stewart Guthrie, was born in Holyoke, Colo., Feb. 11, 1899 and came to Newton with his parents when a lad of seven years of age. He attended the Newton High school, graduating with the class of 1915 at the age of 16, being the youngest member of his class. He later attended Drake university in Des Moines and Coe college in Cedar Rapids where he majored in business administration. Prior to opening his business in Newton, he resided on the farm with his parents.

He was married to Hazel Dolph in 1922 in Newton and to this union were born two daughters, Darlene Frances and Myrna Jean, both at home.

Rites on Saturday
He was a member of the Methodist church, the Newton Chamber of Commerce and the Jasper county Farm Bureau.

Mr. Guthrie was preceded in death by his parents, his father in 1924, and his mother in 1928, and a brother, Vernon, in 1941.

Survivors include his widow, Hazel; daughters, Darlene Frances and Myrna Jean and a brother, Stewart Guthrie, of Newton.

Funeral services will be held at the First Methodist church, 2 p.m. Saturday, with the Rev. Dr. Briggs officiating.

Interment will be made in the Palo Alto cemetery. ~ The Newton Daily News, July 19, 1946.
