Lawrence W. Hammerly, 101, of Newton died of a heart ailment Monday at Heritage Manor there, where he had lived three years. Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Newton Congregational United Church of Christ, of which he was a member. Burial will be at Wittemberg Cemetery near Newton.

Mr. Hammerly had lived near Newton all his life and was the former owner and operator of Cloverblom Dairy Farm. He was a member of Jasper County Farm Bureau, Newton Masonic Lodge, Newton Rotary Club, Newton American Legion Post, Wittemberg Cemetery Association and Wittemberg Congregational United Church of Christ. He was a pioneer organizer of the Jasper County Conservation Board and an Army veteran of World War I.

He is survived by a son, Raymond of Newton; three daughters, Joan Tjossern and Harriet Smith, both of Newton, and Miriam Slings of Spring Lake, Mich.; 15 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.

Friends may call from 1 to 5 p.m. today at Wallace-Pence Funeral Home in Newton. The family will greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the church in Newton. Memorial contributions may be made to his church in Newton, Jasper County Historical Society or Wittemberg Cemetery Association. ~ The Des Moines Register, February, 1999.
