Charity Brom, 103, of Careage of Newton, a longtime Newton educator, died Wednesday, Feb. 23, at the care facility.

Funeral services will be Monday at 7 p.m. at Wallace-Pence Funeral Home in Newton with the Rev. Willis Grant, pastor of Wittemberg Church in rural Newton, officiating. Burial will be at Newton Union Cemetery on Tuesday at 10 a.m.

Friends may call at the funeral home after 3 p.m. Saturday. Memorials to the American Heart Association, Arthritis Foundation or Newton High School Memorial Fund will be accepted.

The daughter of Cornelius and Mary Hansell Brom, she was born March 30, 1896, in Bethany, Mo. She was a 1915 graduate of Newton High School and graduated from Iowa State Teachers College with a bachelor’s degree in education in 1927.

After college she taught in Dexter before returning to Newton where she worked as a school teacher in the Newton Community School District for several years. She led the normal training department at Newton High School and was a ninth grade reading and English teacher at Central High School. In 1943 she was named the rural school supervisor for the Jasper County superintendent and in 1950 she became Jasper County Supervisor of rural schools. Ms. Brom returned to the Newton system after rural schools were closed and retired in 1971. Following her retirement she worked as a substitute teacher until the late 1970s.

Ms. Brom was a member of the Methodist Church and a life member of the National Education Association, Iowa Education Association and Kelta Kappa Gamma.

She was preceded in death by her parents. ~ The Newton Daily News, February 24, 2000.
