San Diego, Calif. – Robert R. Woodrow, 102, died Monday, May 5, in San Diego, Calif.

Interment will be at a later date in Newton Union Cemetery on the Benjamin Woodrow family plot. Memorials will be accepted in his name to The Veterans Memorial Center and Museum, 2115 Park Blvd., San Diego, Calif., 92101-4792.

Mr. Woodrow attended the University of Iowa and was a member of Phi Delta Theta. He entered the U.S. Army in May, 1918. After returning from the service, he worked as a toolmaker in the One Minute Washer factory, until moving to Webster City. In 1940, Mr. Woodrow moved to San Diego and worked at the Naval Air Station, North Island, for 25 years before retiring as superintendent.

He was born to John and Phobe Woodrow Sept. 17, 1898, in Newton.

He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Margery and Marvin Hamlet of Stockton, Calif.; three grandchildren; and six great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant son, three brothers, two sisters and two wives.

Mr. Woodrow was a life member of the Elks Club and spent 20 years traveling with the Airstream Trailer Club. He was recently awarded the prestigious national Order of Honor by the French government for his service during World War I. ~ The Newton Daily News, May 1999.
