Funeral services for Ralph E. Aanestad, 77, of Ottumwa, former newton Community High School teacher, were held today at the Ottumwa First Lutheran Church.

Rev. Keith Lingwall of Fairfield conducted services. Burial was in Ottumwa Cemetery.

The Reece Funeral Home in Ottumwa was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Aanestad died Wednesday, Feb. 1, at the Ottumwa Hospital.

He taught in the business and commercial department at Newton Community High School for 10 years and later was associated with the Automatic Washer Co. in Newton for a short time.

He moved to Ottumwa in 1946 and was a partner in the Iowa Success School, a business college, until 1967.

He served as coordinator of adult education at Indian Hills Community College in Ottumwa from 1969 until 1975.

Mr. Aanestad had served on the Ottumwa Civil Service Commission from 1963 until 1977 and on the Planning and Zoning Commission from 1958 until 1962.

A member of the Ottumwa First Lutheran Church, he served several terms on the church board and, as a member of the Ottumwa Evening Kiwanis Club, had a perfect attendance record for 45 years.

He is survived by his wife, Helen; two sons, Donald Aanestad of Cedar Rapids and David Aanestad of Coralville; seven grandchildren; a great-grandchild; two sisters, Thelma Boyer of Boise, Idaho, and Velva Winterton of Estherville; and two brothers, Carl Aanestad of Los Angeles, Calif., and Dean Aanestad of Casper, Wyo.

The son of Carl and Christine Larsen Aanestad, he was born Aug. 15, 1906 in Sherman, S. D.

A graduate of Augustana Academy and Augustana College at Sioux Falls, S.D., he did graduate work at the University of Colorado at Boulder.

He was married to Helen Larson June 2, 1931 ~ The Newton Daily News, Newton, Iowa Fri 3 Feb 1984.
