WASHINGTON - Sarah G. Gracey Brown, 88, of washington, Iowa , a biology teacher in Newton Community High School from 1927 to 1934 and from 1946 to 1969, died Sunday, Dec. 29, at Brownlee Health Care Center in Washington.

Graveside rites for Mrs. Brown, the first married woman to teach in the Newton schools during other than wartime years, will be held at 1:30 a.m. Tuesday in Newton Union Cemetery.

The Rev. Scott Coulter, pastor of the Newton United Presbyterian Church, will conduct services.

A special memorial service will be held Sunday evening at the Washington United Presbyterian Home.

The Rev. George Bishop pastor of the Washington United Presbyterian Church, will conduct services.

Memorials to the United Presbyterian Home, 1203 E. Washington Street, Washington, Iowa 52353 will be accepted.

Survivors are a son, James, of Los Angeles, Calif.; a sister, Margaret G. Beveridge, also a resident of the United Presbyterian Home in Washington; and three nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Vernon, in 1971.

The daughter of James and Gracey Kyle Gracey, she was born Dec. 30, 1903 on a farm near Allerton. While an infant, her father died and the family moved to Allerton where she was a 1921 graduate of Allerton High School. She was a 1925 graduate of Monmouth College in Monmouth, Ill., majoring in biology and she received her master's degree in biology from Drake University in Des Moines in 1960.

She also was recipient of numerous National Science Foundation Fellowships.

She was widely acclaimed both in local and state education circles.

Mrs. Brown taught science for two years in Chesterfield, Ill., before moving to Newton in 1927.

She was married to Charles Vernon Brown in 1934. The couple resided on a farm in Wayne County and she taught for two years at Audubon and for two years at Tipton.

She moved to the United Presbyterian Home in 1975. ~ The Newton Daily News, Newton, Iowa Mon, 30 Dec 1991.
