Elvin Edward Hart, 96, a long-time resident of Newton, died this morning, Nov. 2, at the Heritage Manor.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Wallace-Pence Funeral Home.

The Rev. Warren McFate, retired pastor of the First United Methodist Church, will conduct services.

Burial will be in Newton Union Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home after 9 a.m. Sunday and visitation with the family will be held from 2 to 4 and 7 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Memorials to the First United Methodist Church or American Cancer Society will be accepted.

Survivors are a daughter, Evelyn L. Hart of Cedar Falls; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and wife, Edith, June 7, 1991.

Mr. Hart had been a cost accountant for the Automatic Washer Co. from 1917 until the company closed in 1957 and for 12 years at Winpower Manufacturing Co., retiring in 1970.

He was a member of the Newton Masonic Lodge 59 AF and AM and a 50-year member of the Royal Arch Masons Gebal Chapter 12.

The son of George Edward and Amand Stine Hart, he was born Nov. 26, 1898 in rural Newton, was a 1917 graduate of Newton Community High School and graduated from Des Moines Commercial College.

He was married to Gladys Damman July 3, 1924 in Newton and to Cordia Edith Smith Aug. 8, 1938 in Atlantic. ~ The Newton Daily News, Nov. 3, 1995.
