Obituary of Henry F. Vinall
Henry G. Vinall was born in Brighten, Sussex County, England, Nov. 13, 1843. He came to America with his parents in 1849. They crossed the ocean in a sailing vessel being six weeks on the water. Landing at New York they went west to Cincinnati where they remained a few years finally moving to Scott Co., Iowa, near Davenport, where they engaged in farming and the family of ten children were reared.
At 17 years of age he volunteered for service in the Civil War. He joined the 20th Iowa Infantry Company C. Serving 4 years of active service he was mustered out, at Mobile, Alabama, July 8, 1865.
Home from the army he came “out west” to Jasper Co. buying a tract of prairie from the government. On this tract he engaged in farming until 1900.
Nov. 2, 1871 he was married to Miss Jennie Reid and to this union 7 children were born. Frank Delbert who died in 1914, Mrs. Ed W. Guessford, Newton, Iowa; Elisabeth Vinall, Minneapolis, Minn.; Mrs. F. G. Bigelow, Alden, Iowa; Mrs. I. L. Craig, Lansdowne, Penn.; George H. Vinall, Portland, Maine; Mrs. Helen Dennis, Cedar Falls, Iowa.
The family removed to Cedar Falls, and located 2 blocks north of the I.S.T.C. where they have since resided.
When a young man he joined the Christian church. Later transferred to the M.E. church at Killduff. Thence to the M.E. church at Cedar Falls. He has lived a loyal Christian life. His wife died July 14, 1921. Since that time his daughter, Mrs. Helen Dennis has been her father’s constant companion giving him unfailing love and devotion.
The funeral occurred at the home 1123 W. 32 St., Cedar Falls, Ia., Feb. 3, 1926. Rev. A. R. Culver in charge.
The G.A.R. conducted their beautiful service and the American Legion of which his son is a member, formed an escort and sounded the last salute and bugle call at the grave. Taps are sounded, lights are out for another comrade.
Interment was in Lake Wood cemetery, Cedar Falls, Ia.
