Thomas Meek Dead
On Christmas Day, there was brought to Newton the body of Thomas Meek, formerly of Jasper County, and whose name has been before the public for the past few months on account of his being charged with grave crimes, and who has spent quite a long time in jail in Des Moines, awaiting his trail. During his confinement there, his insanity, which has been evident for years, became worse and his health broke down. He was then taken to Mercy Hospital in Des Moines, and there became so violent that he was sent to the insane ward at Anamosa. The case progressed in court, in the meantime, and his attorneys and friends believed him to be the victim of a foul conspiracy, and further believed that all the charges against him would be dismissed, on a motion which they expected to make when Court re-convened after the Holidays. But Mr. Meek died before that could be done. His wife, brother and relatives all believe him to have been innocent, both his wife and brother, E. L. Meek, principal of the Madrid, (Iowa) schools spending liberally of their means to defend him. A son, four years old is the only child of the marriage. The body was accompanied to Newton by his wife and brother, E. L. Meek.
The funeral was held at the home of Mrs. William Hixson, who is Mr. Meek’s aunt, at ten o’clock on Tuesday morning, conducted by Rev. J. C. Willits, of the M.E. church, and the body was interred at Adamson Grove cemetery.
Mrs. Thomas Meek is a teacher in the primary department of the Polk City schools, and has held that position all through her trouble.
