Services Held
Funeral services for Gavin W. “Guy” Wilson, 87, a former mayor and city councilman of Monroe, were held Saturday, February 29, 1992, at the Monroe United Methodist Church.
The Rev. Jerry McGee, pastor of the church, assisted by the Rev. Eldon Pals of Newton, conducted services.
Burial was in Silent City Cemetery in Monroe.
Memorials to the Monroe Emergency Units or the Alzheimer’s Foundation.
Mr. Wilson died at the sheltered care unit of the Pella Community Hospital Wednesday, February 26, 1992.
Survivors are his wife, Jean; three sons, Carl of Monroe, Jon of Cedar Rapids, and Fred of Omaha, Nebraska; a daughter, Ann De Grado of Des Moines; 10 grandchildren, and 13 great grandchildren.
Also surviving is a sister, Grace Rinemuth of Monroe.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Bessie, a brother, Verl, and a sister Greta Riis.
He served several terms on the Monroe City Council and was mayor of Monroe from 1964 to 1967.
A lifelong area resident, he received the Dean Vaught Community Service Award during the 1974 Old Settlers Reunion.
Mr. Wilson was a member of the Monroe United Methodist Church, a charter member of the Monroe Kiwanis Club and a life member of the Jasper County Historical Society.
He was a salesman for Heating Wholesale in Des Moines as well as both a barber and carpenter in Monroe.
The son of John and Jennie Bownman Wilson, he was born February 12, 1905, at Monroe.
He was married to Bessie Thornton, who died in 1932.
He was married to Jean Roberts June 7, 1941 in Milan, Missouri.
