Services Held
Services for Herman Leroy Shilling were held at the Free Methodist church in Knoxville Monday, January 7, 2002, at 11 a.m. Pastor Charlie McMillian officiated the services. Interment was in Graceland Cemetery. Military Honors were provided by American Legion Baty-Tucker Post No. 168, V.F.W. John Myers Post No. 3519.
Herman passed away January 3, 2002, at the Knoxville Area Community Hospital.
Herman Leroy Shilling was born on July 1, 1919, north of Knoxville, the son of Walter Shilling and Mary Jane “Jenny” (Koons) Shilling.
He was raised in Knoxville and on August 23, 1942, he was inducted into the United States Army. Herman was honorably discharged in 1943 and returned home. On August 4, 1943, he was united in marriage to Christena Christensen at her parents home. Herman and Christena farmed for many years. The couple first lived in Bussey, then New Virginia for 1 year before moving to Sully for 3 years. They lived in Monroe for 15 years and moved to Knoxville in January of 1970. Herman worked for Maytag for 28 years from 1953 to 1981. Through the years, Herman was a 4-H leader and had held many offices in the Free Methodist Church of which he was a member. He also belonged to the Morning Kiwanis Club.
He is survived by his wife, Christena; his children, Ronald Shilling of North Fork, California; Shirley Hanawalt and husband Robert and Harley Shilling all of Knoxville; three grandchildren; one step grandson; and two step great grandsons. He also leaves his brother, John of Albia and many other family members and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, and one sister.
