Neal Shaffer Rites Held Friday
Neal Shaffer, son of Adam and Rebecca Jane Shaffer, was born in Hiland county, Ohio on March 18, 1858, and passed away at the home of his son Ray in Monroe, Wednesday evening, January 31, 1940 at 9 o’clock at the age of 81 years, 9 months and 16 days. Mr. Shaffer had been in failing health for about 4 years but was confined to his bed only about 24 hours before his death. Death was caused by an asthmatic condition and a weakened heart. He has been cared for in the home of his son and daughter-in-law part of the time he has been in ill health.
He was reared in Ohio and Illinois, coming with his parents to Illinois when yet a boy where he worked on the farm for sometime before going to Dodge City, Kansas where he took a claim and lived for three years. He came to Monroe in 1888 and has made his home here since. Mr. Shaffer spent his active years on the farm and then moved into town about 25 years ago.
He was united in marriage with Miss Danie Kingery on February 7, 1889. To this union one son, Ray, was born. Mrs. Shaffer preceded her husband into the life immortal August 11, 1922.
Mr. Shaffer was a pioneer who learned in the rugged school of toil, working on the farm as a boy and a young man; then helping to subdue the middle western prairie and bring them under cultivation and production. Coming from Ohio to Illinois and then Kansas and Iowa when each locality was new and sparsely settled and conveniences were few.
There were many difficulties and hardships in those days. Uncomplainingly he met life with courage and fortitude and overcame the difficulties of establishing himself in a new country and living there. He was a good neighbor, always lending aid when needed.
He leaves to mourn his departure the son Ray, a grandson Charles, a stepsister, Mrs. Susan Mock of Mowrystown, Ohio, several nieces and nephews and many friends.
The funeral was held from the home of the son Ray and the Crumpacker Funeral Home Friday afternoon with the Rev. Patterson officiating.
