Services for Vernon O. Seekamp were held Wednesday, April 5, 2000, at the First Reformed Church in Pella. Mr. Leo Renaud spoke. Interment was in Oakwood Cemetery in Pella.
Vernon Owen Seekamp, the fourth of seven children was born to Owen Russell and Ruth Harriet Bowen Seekamp on September 17, 1935, at Black River Falls, Wisconsin. He attended the Norwalk Elementary School at Norwalk, Wisconsin and then two years of high school. Vernon was nine years old when his mother, Ruth, passed away. Vernon was raised and lived various places following her death.
His father then married Thelma Maxine Toms and to this union 19 brothers and sisters were born. Vernon was living in Denton, Texas, when he met Katherine Vander Hart at a Bible conference. They were united in marriage on December 7, 1956, at Des Moines and to this union five children were born: Marvin Dale, Steve Jay, Gloria Ann, Delores Jean and Joel Dean. Vernon and Katherine lived most of their married life at Pella with the exception of the five years they lived at Leighton. In 1957, Vernon began working at the Rolscreen Company in Pella where he was employed in the metal roll-forming department until 1981. He then became a school bus driver for the Pella Community School District, which he did until 1993. Since that time, Vernon has assisted his wife with the operation of their upholstery business. On Saturday morning, April 1, 2000, Vernon passed away unexpectedly on arrival at the Pella Regional Health Center in Pella at the age of 64.
Survivors are his wife, Katherine; their five children and their spouses, Marvin Seekamp and wife Sharon of Pella; Steven Seekamp and wife Gail of Otley, Gloria Butler and husband Robert of Ankeny, Delores Holtz and husband Douglas of Atlantic, Joel Seekamp of Pella; 9 grandchildren; 3 step-grandchildren; 2 step-great-grandchildren. Also surviving are Vernon’s stepmother, Thelma (Toms) Seekamp of Norwalk, Wisconsin; four brothers and a sister; 16 half-brothers and half-sisters.
He was preceded in death by a step-grandson; his father and mother; a sister; three half-brothers.
