Services for Helmut H. (Smitty) Schmidt were held Wednesday, May 19, 1999, at the United Methodist Church in Monroe. Rev. Karen Merrill, pastor officiated the services. Interment was in Gifford Cemetery in Monroe.
Helmut passed away on Sunday, May 16, 1999, at the Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines at the age of 57 years.
Helmut H. Schmidt, the son of Wilhelm and Edeltrout Zimmerman Schmidt, was born September 13, 1941, at Frankfurt, Germany. He came to the United States at the age of 11. On August 3, 1962, he was united in marriage to Verna Stewart at Princeton, Missouri. They have made their home in the Monroe area for the past 23 years. Helmut was employed as shop supervisor for Brown Bros., Inc. and was a member of the Operating Engineers Union, Local #234.
Surviving is his wife Verna; a daughter and son-in-law, Penny and Caryl Van Der Kamp; a son and daughter-in-law, Trevor and Kim Schmidt, all of Monroe, two grandchildren, three step grandchildren, a step great grandchild, two half sisters and four half brothers.
Preceding him in death were his parents and a sister.
A memorial for the playground at Elk Rock State park has been designated by the family.
