Services Held
LaVern C. Schakel, 58, a resident of the Prairie City community until moving to Newton in the 1960’s, died Saturday morning, June 10, 1995, at the Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines of complications of a stroke.
Funeral services were held June 14, 1995, at the Newton Baptist Temple.
The Rev. A. B. Sudbrock, pastor of the church, conducted services.
Burial was in Newton Union Cemetery.
Memorials to the Newton Baptist Temple will be accepted.
Survivors are three sons, Merlyn of Johnston and Chad and Chris, both of Newton; a daughter, Tammy (Mrs. Rodney) Williams of Monroe; two stepdaughters, Stephanie (Mrs. Fred) Frick of Altoona and Julie Sumpter of Newton; and six grandchildren.
Also surviving are a brother, Russell of Monroe; a sister Jane (Mrs. Deverne) Schippers of Monroe; and his parents, Paul and Letha Schakel of Monroe.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents.
Mr. Schakel, a member of the Newton Baptist Temple, had served in the Army.
He was employed by the State of Iowa Department of Transportation as an equipment operator 1.
The son of Paul M. and Letha Kinart Schakel, he was born September 6, 1936, in Monroe and attended Monroe Community High School.
He was married to Connie Bison and August 17, 1979 at Newton to Judith R. Ferree.
