Mrs. Rachel Rush Killed Tuesday At Fairmount
78 Year-old Resident is Struck by Car as She Crosses Highway
Fairmount, Ia. – Mrs. Rachel Ogg Rush, 78-year-old pioneer of this vicinity, was killed almost instantly Tuesday evening about 5:40 o’clock when she was struck by an automobile driven by J. C. Bishop, of Lincoln, Nebr., representative of the Kraft-Phoenix Corporation.
Mrs. Rush had just alighted from an automobile which had brought her from Des Moines and was crossing the highway near the Wayne Volk farm home, enroute to her home a half mile north of Fairmount station, when she was struck by the car.
Dr. H. M. Tharp, Monroe physician, was called and upon examination found that Mrs. Rush had suffered a fractured skull and lacerations about the arms and body.
Carried Eggs to Des Moines
For many years Mrs. Rush had carried eggs and dressed chickens to Des Moines, where she sold her products to a few choice customers, returning with provisions for her home – hitch-hiking both ways.
Rain or shine Mrs. Rush carried an umbrella, which she used to attract the attention of passing motorists, and motorists who traveled the highway from Monroe to Des Moines and back, marveled that she made the trip so many times without an accident befalling her.
County Coroner E. A. McMurray stated that no inquest was necessary.
Mrs. Rush was an aunt of Harry Ogg, of Newton. She is survived by a daughter, Birdie, at home and a son William, of Mitchellville.
Funeral services will be held this afternoon at the Baptist church in Monroe, with interment in the Monroe cemetery.
