Dorothy Rubenstein, 93, who resided at the Iowa Jewish Senior Life Center in Des Moines died Tuesday, October 12, 2004 at Iowa Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m., Thursday, October 14, 2004 at Beth El Cemetery in Omaha, Nebraska.
Dorothy was born the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wolfe Rubenstein in Fort Dodge, Iowa on October 16, 1910. Dorothy attended school in Fort Dodge and was active in basketball, debate and swimming. She graduated with honors from the school of Journalism and Communication at the University of Iowa. After graduation, Dorothy applied for and was appointed to positions in Federal Civil Service where she held positions with H.O.L.C. in Des Moines and Omaha. She later worked for the United States Army Engineers in Nebraska before applying and receiving an appointment to work at Offutt Air force Base. She held a number of positions there and was later appointed to a position as a Personnel Assignment Officer for Professional Personnel in the Surgeon’s Office at Headquarters Strategic Air Command, Offutt Air Force Base, NE. Dorothy retired on May 31, 1969 with over 36 years Federal Service credit.
In November of 1980, Dorothy and her long time companion and friend William Little, decided to move to Phoenix, AZ. They flew out to Phoenix for a two-week tour to decide where they wanted to live. Upon arriving back in Omaha, they began packing and preparing to move. On April 15, 1981 they were ready and started south on US Hwy 73/75, which passes Offutt Air Force Base. They stopped at Offutt to see some old friends and to make a stop at the Base Chapel and a dinner at the Non-Commissioned Officer’s Club. On their trip to Phoenix they stopped at Topeka, KS, Oklahoma City, OK, Amarillo, TX, Albuquerque, NM and Flagstaff, AZ. They lived ins several places within the city and then one day in November 1988 they decided that they should return to the mid-west as they had had all of the over 100 degree days that they wanted to endure. So on April 24, 1989 they were packed and started to their home in Des Moines. They made stops in mostly the same places as on their way to AZ, except for Kansas City, Mo, their last stop before entering Iowa. Thanks to the numerous letters from Mr. John Sayles, of Park Place in Des Moines they were coming to a double apartment that had been arranged for them. They loved living in Park Place and in Des Moines.
Dorothy was preceded in death by two brothers and an infant sister.
She is survived by her friend and companion of 52 years William E. Little of Des Moines.
