Services Held
Graveside services for Helen Marie Reidel, 96, were held September 9, 2000, at Silent City Cemetery in Monroe. Elder Stephen A. Friedman, pastor of the RLDS Church, officiated the services. Helen passed away Wednesday, September 6, 2000, at Careage of Newton of which she had been a resident since November 1993.
Born July 5, 1904, near Otley, Helen was the daughter of Albert Lieuwes and Jane Breen Dykstra. Helen attended Valley, a rural Marion County school, and Monroe Public school, from which she graduated high school in 1922. She attended Central College one year, then transferred to the University of Iowa from which she received a Bachelor’s degree in business and economics. Her passion, however, was teaching elementary children in several Iowa towns and Des Moines before marrying her husband, Ray H. Reidel, on July 20, 1952, and settling with him as a homemaker on his farm in rural Albion and later in Marshalltown. She later served on the Marshall County Board of Education, was a member of Order of the Eastern Star, and the United Methodist church.
Surviving are a sister, M. Faye Clark, nieces Jane Friedman and Daisy Young, nephews Paul and Milo Clark all of rural Monroe, nephew David Clark of Monroe, nieces Ann Cope, Lake Bluff, Illinois, and Kristine Rodman, Jasper, MN, and nephews John Dykstra, Roberts, WI, and Vance and Eugene Moore, Iowa City, plus several grand nieces and nephews and other relatives.
Preceding her in death were her parents, husband, sister Jeanette Moore, and brother Dr. Lewis Dykstra.
A memorial for the Monroe Public Library, to which Helen had previously given a generous gift toward a new library has been designated by the family.
