John Chester Poortinga, 69, of Monroe died April 25 at Skiff Memorial Hospital in Newton.
He was born July 11, 1911 in Marion County to George and Katie Meyers Poortinga. He married Henrietta Wilma Sukkel Oct. 24, 1950 in Jasper County, and the couple had a daughter Julia.
Surviving are his daughter; two grandchildren, Jonathan and Bickley Wilson of Monroe; a brother, Frank Poortinga, and three sisters: Jennie (Mrs. Willis) Nearmeyer, Edith (Mrs. Keith) Nearmeyer and Evelyn (Mrs. Mark) Walker, all of Monroe.
He lived in the Monroe area all his life and farmed until retiring three years ago.
Services were held April 28 at Methodist Church in Monroe. Burial was in Silent City in Monroe. Garden Chapel Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
Memorials may be given to the Monroe Fire Station Building Fund or the Methodist Church.

John Chester Poortinga passed away April 25, 1981, at the Skiff Memorial Hospital in Newton.
Funeral services were held for Mr. Poortinga, 69, of Monroe, Tuesday, April 28, 1981, at the Methodist Church in Monroe. Rev. Jerry Wolcott officiated with burial at Silent City Cemetery in Monroe.
John Chester Poortinga, son of George and Katie (Meyers) Poortinga, was born July 11, 1911, in Marion County. On October 24, 1950, he was united in marriage to Henrietta Wilma Sukkel in Jasper County. To this union was born a daughter, Julia (Mrs. Rick) Wilson and two grandchildren, Jonathan and Bickley Wilson of Monroe, Mr. Poortinga is also survived by a brother, Frank Poortinga and three sisters, Jennie (Mrs. Willis) Nearmyer; Edith (Mrs. Keith) Nearmyer; and Evelyn (Mrs. Mark) Walker, all of Monroe, Mr. Poortinga has lived in the Monroe area all his life. He was engaged in farming until retiring three years ago.
Memorials to the Monroe Fire Station Building Fund or the Methodist Church.
