Services Held
Services for Lois Poortinga were held Friday, July 6, 2001, at Silent City Cemetery in Monroe. Pastor Syd McCrorey, assistant pastor of Community Heights Alliance Church in Newton officiated the services.
Memorials in Lois Poortinga’s name may be left at the Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton.
Lois passed away Monday, July 2, 2001, at the Baxter Health Care Center in Baxter of congestive heart failure.
Born July 15, 1905, in Tracy, Iowa, Lois was the daughter of Warren and Maggie Toom Woodyard. She was a graduate of Colfax High School in 1923 and attended Drake University. She married Frank E. Poortinga June 15, 1927, in Des Moines. She lived in the Monroe area for 55 years. She moved to Newton in 1984 and moved into the Baxter Health Care Center in Baxter in 1991. Lois attended Community Heights Alliance Church, was a member of Navy Mothers, and Pocahontas Lodge. She had been a teacher in the Jasper County Rural Schools.
Survivors are one son and daughter-in-law, Fred and Gayle Poortinga of Iowa Falls; two daughters and sons-in-law, Fred and Jake DeGreef of Kellogg, Iowa and Jean and John Wilcox of Newton, Iowa; 8 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Frank in 1984; daughter, Georgia May Poortinga; twin sisters in infancy; and three other sisters.
