Services Held
Duane Poortinga, 48, of Pella, a lifelong resident of the Otley-Pella area, died Saturday, July 20, at the Knoxville Community Hospital.
Funeral services were held Tuesday at the Calvary Christian Reformed Church in Pella.
The Rev. John Gortner, pastor of the church, conducted services.
Burial was in Evergreen Cemetery in rural Leighton.
Memorials to the Calvary Christian Reformed Church or the American Cancer Society may be left at the Pella Garden Chapel Funeral Home.
Survivors are his wife, Frances, two sons, Jeffrey and Jason, both of Pella; a daughter, Julie of Pella; his mother, Elizabeth Van Huizen of Pella; and four grandchildren.
Also surviving are four sisters, Nancy (Mrs. Clarence) Spoelstra, Evie (Mrs. Dale) Baarda and Sharon (Mrs. David) Steenhoek, all of Pella, and Phyllis (Mrs. Dwayne) Ramer of Reasnor; a brother, Melvin Poortinga of Reasnor; a half-brother, Nelson Van Huizen of Knoxville; and two half-sisters, Judy (Mrs. Michael) Savard of Arizona and Elaine (Mrs. Kurt) Funk of Minnesota.
He was preceded in death by his father, Marion Poortinga, stepfather, Gerrit Van Huizen, and a stepbrother, David Van Huizen.
Mr. Poortinga was a member of the Calvary Christian Reformed Church in Pella.
He was the owner-operator of the D and D Pump Co. in Pella for 30 years.
The son of Marion and Elizabeth Van Schevikhoven Poortinga, he was born December 1, 1942, in Oskaloosa.
He was married to Frances De Vries August 5, 1964 at the Calvary Christian Reformed Church in Pella.
