Services Held
Funeral services for Florence E. Smith Ponder, 86, of Heritage Manor Care Center, a life-long resident of Jasper County and resident of Newton since 1923, were held Thursday, August 6, 1992, at the Newton First Assembly of God.
The Rev. Steve Schubert, pastor of the church, conducted services. Burial was in Newton Union Cemetery.
Memorials to the Skiff Medical Center Auxiliary will be accepted.
Mrs. Ponder died Monday evening at Heritage Manor Care Center after suffering a heart attack.
Survivors are two sons, David Norman Young of Altoona and Clarence Ronald Young of Newton; a daughter, Laura Mae (Mrs. Albert) Jones of Monroe; two step-daughters, Betty Jean (Mrs. Charles) Debban of Cedar Rapids and Mary Ann Ringgenberg of Newton; 12 grandchildren; and 17 great grandchildren. Also surviving is a brother, Clarence E. Smith of Newton.
She was preceded in death by her parents, first husband, Clarence David Young, second husband, Alfred William Ponder Feb. 17, 1987, a son, Eugene Young in infancy and three sisters.
She was employed as a nurse’s aide at Skiff Medical Center for many years and did private family nursing for many years.
The daughter of Ira Scott and Anna Mae Hill Smith, she was born January 2, 1906, in Buena Vista Township and attended Pleasant View School.
She was married to Clarence David Young May 31, 1923 and to Alfred William Ponder November 10, 1950 in Omaha, Nebraska.
