Services held
Services for Earl J. Phifer were held Monday, December 18, 1995, at the United Methodist Church in Monroe. Rev. Karen Merrill, pastor officiated services. Interment was in the Silent City Cemetery.
Earl J. Phifer, age 82, died Thursday, December 14, 1995, at the Iowa Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines.
He was born at Dunreath, in Marion County, Iowa, July 15, 1913, the son of John and Elizabeth Dailey Phifer. On May 11, 1938, he was united in marriage to Edith Warner at Unionville, Missouri. Mr. Phifer served in the Army during World War II and was awarded the Purple Heart. He was a member of the Monroe Volunteer Fire Department for forty years.
Surviving is his wife Edith, four sons and daughters-in-law; Duane and Kittie of Monroe, Daryl and Linda of Schnecksville, Pa, Carroll and Gloria of Ankeny and Ralph and Susie of Monroe, thirteen grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren. Also surviving are two sisters: Colleen Mott of Centerville and Betty Kane of Monroe.
Preceding him in death were his parents and a brother Dale.
Mr. Phifer had operated a commercial trucking business in Monroe for many years and had retired from the Iowa Department of Transportation.
A memorial for the Monroe Emergency Unit as been suggested by the family.
