Services Held
Funeral services for Della Wade Peery, 88, were conducted Saturday, May 11, 1991, at First Christian Church in Newton. Burial was in Colfax Cemetery. She died early Thursday morning at the Health Care Center in Newton.
Survivors are a daughter, Elma Hyndman of Newton, 8 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and 2 sisters, Ila Lamm of Commerce City, Colorado, and Jessie Stevens of Colfax, and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Elmer in 1979, a daughter, Wyonne Damman Goodsell, a brother, and 2 sisters.
The daughter of Andrew Guy and Nancy Anne Irwin Boothe Wade, she was born in Colfax, was graduated from Colfax Community High School and attended Drake University in Des Moines.
Mrs. Peery had been a rural schoolteacher in Jasper County for 11 years, had been a member and past president of Jasper County Writers, Inc. and was a co-editor of their book, “Jasper County Yestertowns”. A well-known and published poet, her writings had appeared in “Lyrical Iowa”, the Woman’s Club of Iowa publications and local newspapers. Two of her books had been published by Young’s Publishing Co. in Virginia. Her writings had been published in numerous magazines for children, church publications, “The Iowan” and “The Instructor”.
She was a member of the Colfax and Galesburg Christian churches, Collegiate Presbyterian in Ames, and First Christian in Newton. A member and past worthy matron of the Monroe Order of Eastern Star, she had also been a member of Monroe Woman’s Club.
She was married to Elmer Peery on May 22, 1922, in Newton. The Peerys had resided on a farm north of Monroe for many years prior to their moving to Searsboro in 1971. In 1981 she moved to Newton.
