Mrs. Martha Jane Palmer
Martha Jane Cory was born in and died in Monroe Iowa, February 14, 1925, aged 89 years, 5 months and 14 days.
She was the fourth in a family, in Crawford Co., Ohio, Sept. 1, 1835, of seven children and the next to the last to depart this life, one sister remains, Mrs. R. C. Stevens, of Guthrie, Oklahoma.
(She was married to) Geo. W. Palmer Feb. 16, 1864 in Ohio. For 35 years they journeyed through sunshine and cloud, joyous and happy in their tasks, until death came and the husband was taken Feb. 22, 1899.
Mrs. Palmer was the mother of six children all of whom survive as follows: Arthur, Mrs. Mary Chipps, Mrs. L. N. Mateer, John J., and Mrs. Chipps. Also of grandchildren and great grandchildren.
The family moved from Ohio to Jasper Co., in 1875 and settled on a farm north of Monroe.
In the fall of 1899 Mrs. Palmer came to Monroe residing here until her death.
She was converted when a young girl and united with the Methodist Episcopal church, remaining a faithful and devoted member to the close of life. A Sunday School teacher, active in the Ladies Aid Society and W.F.M.S., a member of the W.R.C. at one time its president. We need not wonder that she wielded and influence of good during all these years of her life. For her “To live was Christ, to die was gain.”
She will be missed in the Bellvue annual gatherings. Her last illness was of a few days, and last Saturday morning at 5:30 the weary body relaxed and the Spirit winged its flight to the Heavenly City. We mourn but not at those who have no hope. We shall meet again.
The funeral services were held Monday afternoon in the Methodist church, conducted by Rev. E. E. Ilgenfritz. The W.R.C. attended in a body.
A quartette composed of Mrs. H. E. McComas, Mrs. M. I. Shaw, Mrs. O. M. Wilson and Mrs. R. B. Hendershot, Miss Ruth Cash pianist; sang, “Crossing the Bar,” “Face to Face” and “Take the Name of Jesus With You.”
The floral offerings were many and beautiful. Interment was made in the Monroe cemetery.
Tribute to the late Mrs. Geo. Palmer
For nearly 90 years of life, 50 of which was spent in this community, with its vicissitudes, its days of toil and nights of rest, its disappointments and their compensations, Mrs. Palmer walked down life’s pathway through babyhood, through girlhood, through young womanhood, motherhood that touched the keys of her life that brought out the sweetest music. “Mother” so dear to every heart. She was a true mother in every sense of the word.
A chair is vacant, no one can take her place, but her memory will live with us forever and until we too shall pass away, we are her today but tomorrow we know not where we will be if still here with our loved ones. Life is only a thread. Her memory and thoughts of her will live forever. While she has gone from us, and we are left possibly a little while and perhaps for years, her memory will linger with us, we should help each other and that we should love our mother more, mother should be the dearest of all on earth to us; we can never have but one mother, and when mother is gone, the best friend we have is gone, no one can take the place of mother; no one ever did, no one ever will.
A mother to be loved. We love her but God loves her best. She has gone to the home of many mansions to be with her loved ones there and she will watch and wait for coming of loved ones here and sooner or later a voice will say unto you and unto me, come unto Me.
The best friend we have is Jesus and the best fiend we have on earth is our mother. God bless them.
Mother has gone but in her daily life, in her example of goodness, has left her children a legacy more valuable to them than all of the wealth of the world.
2-14-25. A Friend and Neighbor.
