Laurel W. Miller, 79, of 911 N. 8th Ave. E. died Saturday, Nov. 18, at his home of congestive heart failure.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Newton Baptist Temple with Pastor A. B. Subrock officiating. Burial will be at Newton Memorial Park Cemetery.
Friends may call after 1 p.m. Friday at Wallace Family Funeral Home where family will be present from 5 to 7 p.m. Memorials will be accepted for Newton Baptist Temple, Hospice of Jasper County or Skiff Home Care.
The son of William “Bud” and Beulah MacDonald Miller, he was born Nov. 6, 1921, in Clear Lake, S.D. He was a resident in Newton and the surrounding area since 1940. On Oct. 31, 1958, he married Velma L. Davis in Newton. He was a member, treasurer and trustee of Newton Baptist Temple, a member of UAW Local 997 Retirees Union and a former Boy Scouts leader. Mr. Miller served in the United States Army during World War II. He was a furnace attendant for the Maytag Company for 28 years, retiring in 1983.
Survivors include his wife; three sons and daughters-in-law, David S. and Sharon of Conover, N.C., Laurel W. Jr. and Claudia of Dryden, Mich., and Mike of Newton; one daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Gordon Holm of Olathe, Kan.; and four grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons and a daughter.
