Life Story of Ray M. Mikesell
Services for Ray M. Mikesell, 72, a retired V.A. Hospital employee, who died at Collins Hospital in Knoxville December 17, were held at the Knoxville First Christian Church December 19, with Rev. William Travis and Elder Arthur Nichols officiating.
Burial was in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery near Percy under the auspices of the Baty-Tucker American Legion Post #168.
Casket bearers were Frank Dainty, Henry Willis, Frank Mitchell, Harold Carpenter, Richard Heath, and Dwight Mart, Wyatt Welch was soloist, and Mrs. Helen Sutherland was organist.
Ray McKinley Mikesell, youngest son of George Daniel and Pheba Jane (Brown) Mikesell, was born at Bennington, near Percy, on May 18, 1897. On August 16, 1930, at Knoxville, he was united in marriage to Beatrice Alice Morris, of Des Moines, and to this union were born three children: Virginia Mae, James Donald, and Larry Frank.
Mr. Mikesell was a veteran of World War I. He was a member of the Knoxville First Christian Church, a 50-year member of the American Legion, and a charter member of the Marion County Historical Society.
He was preceded in death by his parents; nine half-brothers, Cyrus, Golden, James, Thomas, Willard, Carrey, Fred, Clarence, and Harry Robison; his twin sister, Rachel; a half-sister, Sarah; and his elder son, James, who died from the result of a hunting accident in 1945.
Survivors include his wife, Beatrice of Knoxville; his daughter, Mrs. Ted (Virginia) Parker, of Glendora, Calif.; his son, Larry, a student at UNI in Cedar Falls; a sister, Pearl Mikesell of Knoxville, a half-sister, Mrs. Sylvia Linton of Spokane, Wash.; four grandchildren, Connie, Mike, Teddy, and Julie Parker; several nieces and nephews, plus numerous relatives and friends.
Mrs. Tone (Bessie) Aalbers, the late Tony Robison, Sr., and the late Mrs. Elbert (Celia) Moore were nieces and nephew of Mr. Mikesell. Other Monroe relatives include Mrs. Pearl Baker, Mrs. Dick DeHaai and Carl Mohler.
The Mikesell’s were a pioneer Marion County family, settling at Red Rock in 1843.
