Services Held
Bernice L. Johnson Milburn, 83, of Friendship Manor in Grinnell, a former resident of Newton, died Wednesday evening, April 7, 1993, at the Manor from complications following a stroke.
Funeral services were held Monday at the First United Methodist Church in Newton.
The Rev. Todd Schlitter, associate pastor of the church, conducted services. Burial was in Newton Memorial Park Cemetery.
Memorials to the Friendship Manor Activity Fund or the American Heart Association will be accepted.
Survivors are five sons, Donald and Gary, both of Grinnell, Dale and Larry, both of Newton, and James of Whittier, California; four daughters, Wanda (Mrs. Norman) White of Ankeny, Beverly (Mrs. Joe) Deutsch of Monroe, Joan (Mrs. Stan) Sievers of Newell and Joyce (Mrs. Dick) Capps of Knoxville; 27 grandchildren; and 30 great-grandchildren.
Also surviving are five sisters, Irma (Mrs. Willie) Laymiller and Naomia (Mrs. Glenn) Shaffer, both of Grinnell, Thelma (Mrs. Corwin) Hadley of New Providence, Maxine (Mrs. George) Strawser of Anoka, Minnesota, and Betty (Mrs. Cleo) Strawser of Nevada.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Omar W., June 15, 1991, and two brothers, Virgil Johnson and Clifford Johnson.
Mrs. Milburn, a homemaker, was a member of the First United Methodist Church, the Oak Ridge Grange and the Homemakers Club No. 3.
The daughter of William Thomas and Gracie Jane Davis Johnson, she was born Aug. 20, 1909 in Malcom.
She was a 1928 graduate of Grinnell High School.
Mrs. Milburn had resided in Grinnell and Kellogg prior to moving to Newton.
She was married to Omar W. Milburn Dec. 20, 1928, at Grinnell.
