Funeral services were held for Donald F. Meyer Thursday, March 13, 2008, Second Reformed Church, Pella, Iowa. Interment was in Oakwood Cemetery at Pella. He passed away March 10, 2008.
Donald Freeman Meyer was born on April 7, 1915, in a farmhouse near Galesburg, Iowa. He was the youngest of two children that were born to Arie and Josephine (Van Rheenen) Meyer and received his formal education at the Galesburg Country Grade School and attended the Methodist Church in Galesburg. He married Lorena Faye Weyers in Pella, Iowa. Donald and Faye raised two wonderful children: Duane Keith who was born on February 2, 1946, and Sheryl Ann who was born on December 1, 1947, while they were living in Otley, Iowa. The first year of their marriage, Donald worked in the coalmines south of Pella along with his brother-in-law, Andrew L. Schippers. In 1942, Donald and Don Kamerick became partners and began a radio repair business known as D & D Radio Repair in a rented building in Pella. Donald later bought out his partner, Don Kamerick, and purchased the building and the business became known as Meyer’s Radio & TV, which was located at 720 Main Street in Pella, Iowa. Soon thereafter the economy became depressed and television sales were lean so Donald bought a semi-truck and hired drivers and began hauling tractors. He later drove his own truck hauling produce to the East Coast and Southern States. After 62 years in the radio and television business his children convinced him it was time to retire and so in April of 2006, he retired at the age of 91 years.
Survivors are his wife of 67 years, Faye, their two children and their spouses, four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. They and their families are: Duane K. and Laura Lee (Klein) Meyer of Pella, Iowa; Laurie Dawn (Meyer) Struve, Nicholas James, Michael Duane Struve; Lance Duane and Suzanne Marie (Brooks) Meyer, Alexandria Marie, Julie Lee Meyer; Derek Lee and Wendy Renee (Ulmer) Meyer; Noland Keith, Makenzie Kay Meyer; Sheryl Ann and Louie J. Kamerick of Pella, Iowa; Melissa Dawn (Kamerick) and Steve L. Crew, Skyler Steven, Devin Don Crew.
Donald was preceded in death by his parents, Arie and Josephine Meyer; his parents-in-law; Dirk L. and Maggie (Van Hemert) Weyers; his sister Veda M. Schippers who passed away May 25, 1987, and his brother-in-law, Andrew L. Schippers who passed away August 28, 1982.
