Services Held
Services for Bertha Meyer were held Wednesday, May 28, 1997, at the Garden Chapel Funeral Home in Pella. Officiating services was Rev. J. Mark Beach. Interment was in Graceland Cemetery in Pella.
Bertha Emma Branderhorst was born September 16, 1899, at Noord Brabant in the Netherlands, to William Marius and Marie Van Beek Branderhorst. Bertha came to the United States at the age of nine years, with her parents in 1908, who settled in Pella, Iowa. The family moved to Prairie City later and also lived in the Tracy, Iowa area before retiring in Pella. On December 30, 1920, she was united in marriage to Peter R. Meyer in Pella and to this union two daughters were born: Cynthia Clara and Mary Joan. They lived in and around the Pella area until 1943, when they accepted an appointment to work on the Indian Mission Field in New Mexico. They returned to Pella in 1953, where they continued to make their home. On November 13, 1984, Peter passed away at the age of 87. Bertha continued to live in the apartment until she entered Hilltop Manor in July of 1985. She remained a resident there until her declining health made it necessary for her to enter a nursing home. In October of 1994, she entered Clearview Manor in Prairie City.
Surviving is her daughter, Mary De Young of Pella; a granddaughter, Merrille; two great-grandchildren, Megan and Cody Frantum of Woodward, Iowa; a brother-in-law, the Rev. Elco Oostendorp of Jenison, Michigan; two sisters-in-law, Hendreen Branderhorst of Oskaloosa and Mildred Branderhorst of Pella; and many nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death besides her husband, Peter, were her daughter, Cynthia, a grandson, Merrill DeYoung, her son-in-law, Dale DeYoung, her parents and all of her brothers and sisters: Pearl – Mrs. henry Blacquire, Emma – Mrs. William Van Dort, Gertie – Mrs. John DeBoef, infant brother Gysbert; Gerrit; Marie – Mrs. Hessel Van Ryswyk; Nellie – Mrs. Peter Van Ryswyk; William; Maggie – Mrs. John Schut; Johanna – Mrs. John Monsma; Gysbert; Cora – Mrs. Elco Oostendorp; Lamb; Hestr – Mrs. Lamber Veenstra.
Bertha was a member of the First Christian Reformed Church in Pella.
