The community was saddened and shocked Thursday evening by the sudden and unexpected death of Mrs. William McDaniel. Though she had not been in health for many years she was as well as usual and had been over to a neighbor’s earlier in the evening. She also had called her daughter, Mrs. Batty to inquire of their state. Then illness and death overtook her about eleven o’clock.
Mary Mariah Brown, daughter of Preston and Julia Brown, was born in Marion county, Iowa, Jan. 22, 1868 and passed away at her home in Monroe, Oct. 27, 1938 at the age of 70 years, 9 months and 5 days. Death was due to a heart ailment.
She was reared in this community and has lived here all her life with the exception of about three years spent in Colfax, Iowa. Here, by her kindness she has endeared herself to her friends and neighbors.
Mary Mariah Brown was united in marriage to William McDaniel on December 31, 1885 in Knoxville, Iowa. To this union were born seven children, one daughter dying in infancy.
Mrs. McDaniel united with the Baptist church about twenty-four years ago and entered into life activities as long as her health would permit. She has been a member of the Rebekah lodge for twenty-two years. She was very faithful to this order and was a member of the Past Noble Grand club.
Mrs. McDaniel was a kind loving wife and mother, her going is a great shock to the family but more especially to Mr. McDaniel who is past eighty years of age.
She was preceded in death by her father and mother, one brother and one sister. In going to the great beyond she leaves in sorrow her husband; six children: Mrs. George Batty of Monroe; Mrs. Will Wadell of Des Moines; Mrs. Delbert Zerley of Runnells; Sam of Reasnor; Edward of Newton; Mrs. Vern Eaton of Newton; thirteen grandchildren and two great grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Ellen Seevers of Monroe; Mrs. Esie Renfro of Mitchellville; and Mrs. Adeline O’Mally of Des Moines; one brother, William of Colfax; other relatives and many friends.
The funeral was conducted from the Methodist church Sunday afternoon, October 30 under the direction of J. R. Crumpacker and the Rev. Elmer L. Patterson. Interment was made in the Monroe cemetery.
