In Memoriam – Mrs. Marietta (Byers) McCuen 1861-1936
Marietta Byers was born near Pella, Iowa, July 21, 1861, and departed this life at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Celia Lust, near Tool’s Chapel, August 17, 1936. She was married to William McCuen, February 8, 1883. Together they spent all of their married life in the immediate community where they both ended their earthly existence. Mr. McCuen preceded his wife “Through the shadows of the Valley” by a little over three years. Their marriage was blessed with the birth of two daughters, both of whom are living to mourn the loss of their beloved parents. They are Mrs. Leona M. Fudge of Monroe, and Mrs. Celia Z. Lust. There is also one granddaughter, Mrs. Mabel L. Kool of Monroe, and her son (a great grandson of Mrs. McCuen) Dean Allen Kool. To these sorrowing hearts, the memory of a good woman and mother, is like a precious ointment that distils itself into hope unspeakable and full of glory.
Mrs. McCuen is spoken of by all who knew her as “A good woman”. She was modest, quiet, unassuming, a lover of home and the virtues that find deep root there. She was associated in fellowship and worship with the congregation that worship at Tool’s Chapel. In all debated questions she sought to associate herself on the side that could stand moral inspection. She has ceased from her labors, but her works do follow after her.
Funeral services were held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Lust. The same was conducted by Rev. Raoul R. Moser, of the Methodist Episcopal church of Monroe; who officiated in the absence of Rev. R. E. Hodgson, the regular pastor at Tool’s Chapel. The body was interred by the side of that of her departed husband, in the Monroe Cemetery.
